| Dr. Haggerty received his bachelor and medical degrees from the University of Missouri where he was awarded the Michael E. DeBakey award for research and the Marion S. DeWeese award for outstanding performance in surgery.
He then completed his internship and residency in general surgery at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago in 1998. While at Rush, he won the Chicago and Midwest Regional American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma resident research paper competition and received second prize in the Rush surgical sciences research competition.
Dr. Haggerty has combined an academic career with private practice, and is currently a clinical faculty member of
University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine. He is a member of several surgical societies, including the American College of Surgeons, the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, the American Hernia Society, the Chicago Surgical Society, and the American Society of General Surgeons. He has given numerous presentations to nurses, students and fellow physicians; has contributed to text books; has been published in peer reviewed journals; and has been an invited reviewer for two medical journals.
Priding himself on excellence in patient care and very low complication rates, Dr. Haggerty has become one of the premier surgeons on the North Shore. He enjoys the field of general surgery, but has devoted much of his over ten years in practice to mastering advanced laparosopic surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, and hernia repair. He is currently heading up clinical research in these fields, further solidifying him as a local expert.
Being well rounded, he is involved in multiple activities and leadership positions at local, regional and national levels, is routinely called upon as a surgical expert for legal cases, and is a surgical consultant for the Chicago Bears. He and his wife Pride Turner Haggerty, and three children reside in Lake Forest, Illinois.
